There is a number of 'DREAM' PhD studentships available (to UK graduates) through the Data, Risk & Environmental Analytical Methods CDT based at Brimingham/Cambridge/Cranfield/Newcastle. Many of these are well-suited to able, geo-flavoured graduates from July and September this year. See http://www.dream-cdt.ac.uk/ for details. The Newcastle based topics are as follows:
Newcastle University-based projects
- 1.Massive multi-agent simulation of environmental risks to interdependent infrastructure;
- 2. Environmental risks to global resource flows;
- 3. High resolution modelling of real-world floods - models, forecasts and uncertainties;
- 4. Extreme rainfall forecasting: new statistical simulation and Big Data methods for making sense of rainfall radar and rain gauges;
- 5. Capturing Tsunamis and Storm Surges: Coupling the Human and Natural Systems through Games Technology;
- 6. Earth observation for UK-wide flood infrastructure risk management;
- 7. Preserving Privacy for Urban Data in the Internet of Things;
- 8. Big data real-time online analysis of urban flooding impact on traffic flows;
- 9. Improving decision making in hazard situations using geovisualisation;
- 10. Can citizen science observations improve real-time flood risk assessment - bringing the crowd to the cloud?
There are summary details of the scope of each of these by selecting the topics on the web site (http://www.dream-cdt.ac.uk/studying/application/).
These, together with the other 17 projects listed (at Birmingham, Cambridge and Cranfield), will be competitive: not all are funded and the decision on which 15 will go ahead will be made by matching the best qualified graduates with the most appropriate project. The deadline for applications is March 13th ...
