Dear Andy,
From what I can see, the behaviour of closing all figures when starting
dates back to SPM'94 (by the way, it was a beautifully compact version
of SPM with just under a hundred files and 5,000 lines of code (M and C,
without the comments)).
I don't think there is a way to disable this behaviour without editing
spm.m (comment line 327: spm_figure('close',allchild(0));). It would be
possible to control it via a new default option or remove it entirely;
the same would apply to the clearing of all variables from the workspace
when starting and quitting the interface. If some of you feel strongly
about this, please let me know.
Best regards,
Guillaume.
