• Discover more about research on MenB carriage in teenagers
• Meet the researchers involved in shaping a national government backed study
Teenagers carry meningococcal bacteria much more than any other age group. So we need to know whether vaccinating teenagers against MenB could prevent them unknowingly carrying and spreading the infection to others. Thanks to a successful MRF campaign, the government has committed to fund a national study to definitively answer this question. If the vaccine does prevent carriage, then immunising teenagers could be the best way to protect the whole population against this deadly disease.
To enable this large-scale study to provide a clear answer, we need more information on how it should be run, MRF’s new project in Bristol aims to provide this. Led by Professor Adam Finn, the study will investigate new sampling techniques, and test-run the research in schools.
The researchers kicked off their investigation by taking swab and spit samples from students at participating Bristol 6th form centres. The results from these samples will reveal patterns of bacterial carriage and suggest whether or not the MenB vaccine affects it. The lessons learned from this research could potentially result in a brand new immunisation programme that protects everyone against MenB.
As part of this research discovery evening, you will have the chance to meet the scientists and experience research in action.
