Dear colleagues,
The University of Edinburgh is part of a Scotland-wide PhD programme on motor neurone disease (MND) and multiple sclerosis research (SPRINT-MND/MS). As part of this, Jeni Harden and I both have sociological PhD projects available. Jeni's concerns the experiences of children and their families with paediatric MS; mine relates to how MND research and advocacy shape each other. Both projects would be suited to excellent candidates with backgrounds in (e.g.) sociology and in science and technology studies. Competition for these awards will be strong, with the best applicants from across the disciplines represented by the PhD programme ultimately being awarded studentships. Any successful social science applicants will be situated within the Usher Institute for Population Health Sciences, in the Deanery of Molecular, Genetic and Population Health Sciences (where Jeni and I are based). Our Dean is Sarah Cunningham-Burley (Professor of Medical and Family Sociology), and the Usher Institute includes a number of medical sociologists and anthropologists. Hence, potential applicants can be assured that a move away from a social science faculty to Edinburgh Medical School will still mean high-level sociological support and expertise is close at hand. We also anticipate that the students will make links with social scientists based in other centres at Edinburgh, such as the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships (Co-Directed by Jeni) and the Centre for Science, Knowledge and Policy (of which I am Associate Director).
More detail about the programme as a whole, and the specific PhD projects, can be found at the following site:
www.edneurophd.ed.ac.uk/sprint-mndms-phd-programme<http://www.edneurophd.ed.ac.uk/sprint-mndms-phd-programme>
Studentships are for three years and include a standard stipend, UK/EU fees* and an allowance for consumables and travel. The cohort of SPRINT students will also be offered opportunities to attend clinics and meet patients, undertake 'taster' placements in a different field, and participate in public engagement and researcher networking events.
The deadline for applications is 20th January 2017.
Interviews will be held in Edinburgh on 3rd February 2017.
*Non-UK/EU applicants are eligible to apply. Since any shortfall in stipend or fees would need to be met by the supervisory team, additional discussion about this will be necessary and written agreement from Jeni or I will need to accompany the application.
I would really appreciate it if you could please disseminate this message to anyone who you feel would be appropriate for, and interested in, these studentships.
Many thanks, and all best wishes for 2017!
Martyn
