PERFORMING THE PENIS
CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS
A Roundtable at Brunel University London on Friday 3 March 2017
This roundtable aims to explore performances, displays, and representations of penises. We are deploying ‘performance’ in a wide sense: here it includes media and spaces in which penises are explicitly or implicitly on display including in medical literature, sport, drag, art, pornography, comedy, stripping, sex work, etc. We are calling academics, artists, medical practitioners, activists and performers to consider:
• How is the penis performed at different times and in different places?
• How do we learn about penises: what to do with them, how to view them, and how to talk about them?
• What does it mean to choose or to choose not to have a penis?
• How are cultural notions of the ideal or the abhorrent penis formed and changed?
• How have penises been differently pathologised through time in relation to health, illness, gender, and sexuality?
Participants will each present for five minutes. Then we will have focused discussions and work towards identifying research areas that we might continue to develop as a network. Please send your CV, a 300 word paragraph that outlines your interest in the area, and a brief indication of what your five minute talk will address. We are particularly interested in contributors who have something to say about penises and performance in relation to gender and sexual politics, masculinities and femininities, trans*, body modifications, notions of normal/pathological, obscenity, and medicalization.
Funding for travel within the UK will be available for a limited number of participants.
