italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
[Please forward to interested parties]
Dear All,
Further on the circulation and interrelations of lyric forms in medieval
times.
You are invited to a musical seminar in the back bar of the Mill Pub, Mill
Lane, Cambridge on Tuesday 31 January, 6.00-7.00pm.
__________
IBN AL-'ARABI AND ABRAHAM IBN EZRA
Next Tuesday I shall be presenting a seminar on two medieval poets, a Jew
and a Muslim, who were key spiritual figures in their time.
I shall also talk about poems in the 'muwashshah' form, a dance-song form
which has maintained undiminished popularity in the Arab world to the
present day.
Ibn al-'Arabi (1165-1240) is known as the great teacher (sheikh al-akbar).
Originally from Murcia, he wrote copiously about the philosophy of Sufi
Islam. He also wrote poetry, including poems in the 'muwashshah' form.
Abraham Ibn Ezra (1089-1167) is a much respected figure in Judaism to the
present day. He too was originally from al-Andalus (Tudela), and was a
mathematician, astrologer and biblical commentator. He too wrote poetry,
including poems in the 'muwashshah' form.
I shall give a short account of both men. Including descriptions of their
cosmologies, with points which accord interestingly with the Divina Commedia
of Dante Alighieri.
That will be followed by a brief outline of the development and spread of
the 'muwashshah' form of correspondence poetry in Arabic and Jewish culture
to the present day.
The discussion of the "muwashshah" form will be developed in more detail in
future seminars.
VENUE: The Mill Pub, Mill Lane [opposite Scudamore's Punts.
DATE: Tuesday 31 January
TIME: 6.00 to 7.00pm
ADMISSION: Free. But the pub management would appreciate it if you buy a
drink...
