The English Goethe Society is delighted to announce the winners of our 2016 prizes.
The PEGS Prize for an outstanding article appearing in Publications of the English Goethe Society in the previous year goes to Nicholas Saul (Durham University) for his article '"Vorgänger Darwins" or "Nachfolger Goethes"? Wilhelm Bölsche on Evolutionism in Goethe and Novalis or, Literature and the Two Cultures Then and Now', which appeared in PEGS 84.1 (2015), pp. 76-91.
The winner of the Goethe Prize for an outstanding student essay on Goethe is Mercy Hadfield (Queen's College, Oxford) for 'What role does Gretchen play in the final scene of Faust II and how does this affect our interpretation of the play?'
The biennial Thomas Mann Prize (funded by the Ida Herz Bequest) for an outstanding student essay on Thomas Mann was awarded to Syamala Roberts (Jesus College, Cambridge) for her essay 'Konturen und Trübungen: Der Tod in Venedig and Rilke's Third Elegy'.

Prize Essay Competitions
The English Goethe Society has three essay prizes in its gift.
Goethe Prize
The English Goethe Society awards one yearly prize for the best undergraduate or post-graduate essay on Goethe's life and works. The prize is in the amount of £100. Articles that meet the standards of original research will be considered for publication in Publications of the English Goethe Society. The closing date is 1 October every year.
Essays of up to 5,000 words, which should not have previously been published, should be sent by e-mail to the editors of PEGS: Dr Kevin Hilliard ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>, Dr Angus J. PEGS Prize
The English Goethe Society awards one yearly prize for the best article published in PEGS<http://www.englishgoethesociety.org/PEGSSubmissions.html> the previous year. The selection process will be conducted by the editors and expert members of the Editorial Board. The prize is in the amount of £100. The winner will be announced at the first Council Meeting of the English Goethe Society each year.
Thomas Mann Prize
The Thomas Mann Prize, in the amount of £100, is funded by the Ida Herz Bequest (Ida Herz was a friend of Thomas Mann), and is awarded for an undergraduate or post-graduate essay that addresses some aspect of Thomas Mann's life and work. It is awarded in even-numbered years, alternating with an endowed lecture; at the discretion of the Council, the essay may be published in PEGS. Essays should be no more than 5000 words long and should be neither published nor under consideration for publication. The closing date is 1 October in even years. Submissions should be made by e-mail to the editors of PEGS, as set out above.
