The Department of Social Sciences at Loughborough University invites applications for social policy relevant PhD study in within the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Midlands Graduate School Doctoral Training Centre (DTC).

The Department of Social Sciences is home to Criminology and Social Policy (CASP), The Centre for Child and Family Research, and The Centre for Research in Social Policy. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 100% of research activity conducted within the department was judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent. The department is currently ranked nationally as 2nd for Research Quality (REF, 2014) and 6th for Research Impact (Times Higher Education 2014).

An ESRC Studentship will start on 1 October 2017, cover full PhD fees and provide a tax-free stipend (£14,296 pa in 2016). Students must provide evidence of significant and appropriate research training, normally through the attainment of a previous research methods masters qualification, in order to apply directly to the PhD programme (+3 route). Students without this would normally be funded for a Masters before PhD (1+3 route).
