Topic: Climate regulating services of brownfield land: Potential for integrated adaptation and mitigation in urban environments
Summary: The climate-related benefits of urban green space (e.g. street trees, parks, woodlands) have been widely studied as a solution to moderate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and reduce flood risk. Additionally, vegetation acts as a carbon store and improves urban air quality. However, in densely built-up areas, vegetation is sparse, and whilst there is a recognised need to incorporate more urban green space as an adaptation response to climatic hazards, this is challenging when space is at a premium. Brownfield land is currently under-utilised and presents a key opportunity to provide new urban green space. This project seeks to investigate the extent to which brownfield land is providing, or has the potential to provide, similar climate regulating ecosystem services to green spaces.
