RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2017: London, 29th August - 1st September 2017
CFP Geographies of active living
Convenors: Louise Meijering ([log in to unmask]) and Gerd Weitkamp ([log in to unmask])
Encouraging active living by integrating physical activity into everyday routines can play a role in adopting a less sedentary lifestyle and in reducing health problems such as obesity among both children and adults. Active living can be enhanced by different types of everyday activities, ranging from walking and cycling, to doing yard work and vacuuming, to raking leaves and climbing stairs. Examples of places that facilitate active living are, for instance, separate bike lanes and walking trails or parks close to work- and home-environments.
In this session we seek papers that explore spaces of active living, and particularly how the physical and socio-economic environment impacts physical activity.
Potential topics include, but are not restricted to:
- Active living in urban neighbourhoods
- Active living in rural communities
- Age-friendly environments
- Active living and the work/school environment
- Routes to school and work
- Active transportation
- Walkability and cyclability
- Socio-economic inequalities in active living
- Improving urban design to encourage active living
- Promoting active living
- Methodological issues in studying active living
- Active living and urban green space
- Physical activity affordances in outdoor environments
