Bloomsbury Wins coveted Dartmouth Medal for the third time in six years.
January 23, 2016 - Bloomsbury's Encyclopedia of Embroidery from the Arab World, edited by Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood, has been awarded the 2017 Dartmouth Medal by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) division of the American Library Association (ALA).
The Dartmouth Medal recognizes a reference source of outstanding quality published in the previous year (December 1 to December 1), and is chosen by a committee made up of reference subject experts from academic, public and sometimes school and other librarians.
The 2017 Dartmouth Medal is the third awarded to a Bloomsbury reference product since 2011, following awards for Mammals of Africa in 2014, and Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion and the online Berg Fashion Library in 2011.
From the award committee, "The 'Encyclopedia of Embroidery from the Arab World' is a unique and exceptional reference work. It is both an anthropological and historical source discussing the relationships of identity and adornment and a tool for learning about the craft of embroidery."
Richly illustrated with over 800 images of clothes, accessories, cushions, bed linen, curtains, floor coverings and wall hangings, many of which have never been published before, the Encyclopedia of Embroidery from the Arab World is the first reference work to chart the history of embroidery from Ancient Egypt to the present day and to offer an authoritative guide to all the major embroidery traditions of the region. The project's editor, Dr. Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood is the director of the Textile Research Centre, Leiden.
The award, which comes quickly after the Futurebook Platform of the Year was awarded to Bloomsbury Fashion Central, and Berg Fashion Library was named Most Improved Product from The Charleston Advisor "Best and Worst" Readers' Choice Awards, represents the excellent quality of products coming from Bloomsbury for the library and academic market.
