Participation, Power and Engagement - An Examination of Factors Influencing Engagement and Disengagement Among Members of an Employers Association
Swansea University's School of Management and the Building & Engineering Services Association (BESA), supported by the ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership for Wales (Wales DTP), invites applications for funded PhD study. This ‘collaborative studentship’ will commence in October 2017, the deadline for applications being February the 1st 2017.
This project involves an ethnographic examination of engagement within the BESA and its membership (currently 1200 engineering firms). Traditionally male dominated, the BESA is an employers association that works to serve the interests of the building, construction and maintenance industry. The BESA wishes to better understand the nature of engagement of its membership and the specific challenges associated with how engagement happens within the BESA and across its membership. To this end, core research questions include:
• What does engagement look like in an employer association?
• Do powerful interest groups mediate or otherwise subvert forms of engagement?
• Can engagement work across competing interests?
It is envisaged that relations between infrastructure contracts will be explored in relation to modes of engagement, gender and diversity across Building Engineering and Construction firms across the UK. Such an approach brings together the macro level of political economy and public policy to sector and firm decision-making and the ways this is communicated and accomplished within and across the BESA and its membership. Ultimately this studentship offers training in ethnographic approaches to organisational research that aims to unpick the complex nature of employee engagement within Small and Medium sized Enterprises of large engineering and infrastructure investment projects.

This studentship is available on either a 1+3 or +3 basis. A 1+3 studentship provides funding for four years (or part-time equivalent), completing a research training Master's in the 1st year, followed by 3 years research funding for a PhD. A +3 studentship provides funding for the three years PhD research study only (or part-time equivalent).
Eligibility
ESRC studentships are highly competitive; candidates should have an excellent academic background in the social sciences, holding a 1st or strong upper 2nd class degree; applications from those also holding a relevant research training Master's degree (or an equivalent background in research training) will be considered for a +3 award. Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements.
Funding Details
The studentship commences in October 2017 and will cover your tuition fees as well as a maintenance grant (currently £14,296 p.a. for 2016/17 for full-time students, updated each year); and includes an additional Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of up to £750 for three years for full-time students (pro rata for part-time students).
