Professor in Design Leadership

Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. The School of Arts, Design and Architecture (ARTS) is an institution of higher education for design, media, architecture, motion picture, art education and art. The current key areas of research are design, digital media, audiovisual representation, art, visual culture, welfare architecture and emerging technologies as well as urban planning and design. The school produces specialists and innovators of art, design and architecture with strong artistic and technical skills.


Department of Design is an academic community of approximately 850 students, 70 doctoral students and 70 faculty members. The department conducts research and provides education in bachelor, master and doctoral programmes across a broad range of subjects and themes. Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture has decided to extend the application period of the

Professor in Design Leadership

The current applications will be taken into account, and the applicants can update their applications until February 15th, 2017.

The position can be filled in Assistant / Associate / Full Professor level of the Aalto University Tenure track system.


Job description

Design leadership is a cross-disciplinary competence area covering design practice, brand and business management, innovation, creative leadership, design entrepreneurship and design strategy.

In addition to teaching, the professor develops and leads multi- and interdisciplinary research across the departments and schools of Aalto University in close connection with external stakeholders.


Requirements

The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their merits in research, teaching, academic leadership, and practice in design leadership.

The applicant is expected to have:

  *   Doctoral degree in a relevant field
  *   Research agenda that complements and expands the core areas of the department
  *   Teaching competence
  *   Experience in collaboration with design leadership practice
  *   International networks within the field of professorship

Tenure track in Aalto University

The position will be placed on the Aalto University Tenure Track. Individuals on the tenure track have the possibility to advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all areas of their scope of duty. Launched only in 2010, the tenure track has attracted a wide range of international applicants, giving Aalto University the possibility of recruiting top experts and young research talent to join the Aalto University community.

Throughout their careers, those in the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific/artistic research, to provide related higher academic education, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field. Salary

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.

The application process includes two phases. In the first phase the applicants are required to submit the following material:

  1.  Motivation letter
  2.  Curriculum Vitae, including contact information
  3.  List of publications
  4.  5 most significant publications in PDF format
  5.  Design leadership portfolio including 5 most significant projects in a single PDF file, size limited to 100 MB
  6.  Statement describing the applicant´s vision of research and teaching (max 2 pages)

All application materials should be submitted in English. Aalto University does not accept any recommendations for applicants during the first phase of the application process.

Aalto University may perform a publication data analysis of the applicants’ scientific publications based on the applicant’s CV and list of publications unless the applicant declines the analysis. This information is used to measure scientific activity and it will be collected and analyzed based on information available on public databases.

From amongst the applicants in the first phase, Aalto University will select those who will be asked to supplement their application materials. Supplemented applications are submitted for review by external experts (the second phase of the application process).
