PhD Studentships in Italian Studies at the University of Leeds
Italian at the University of Leeds invites applications for PhD study in
areas related to Italian studies, culture, language, literature and
cinema among other subjects.
Italian at Leeds is one the most innovative subject areas on campus and
one of the top rated Italian departments in the country. Our students
will conduct independent research in a world-leading academic
environment. In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2014)
Italian contributed to the submission of the School of Languages,
Cultures and Societies (Unit of assessment 28). As an independent unit,
Italian at Leeds received top 5* ratings in the Research Assessment
Exercise (RAE) of 1996 and 2001, and in 2008 it ranked second nationally
(after Cambridge). In recent years, our commitment to excellent research
has secured three major grants, which further enhanced the thriving
research culture of Italian at Leeds (Italian Voices: Oral Culture,
Manuscript and Print in Early Modern Italy, 1450-1700, Dante and Late
Medieval Florence: Theology in Poetry, Practice and Society, and
‘Petrarch Commentary and Exegesis c.1350-1650’, AHRC project starting on
January 2017). Thanks to our programme LivItaly, Italian at Leeds
attracts important figures in contemporary Italian culture. Our students
will have the opportunity of meeting Italian writers, singers,
journalists and professionals. Leeds also hosts the prestigious Leeds
Centre for Dante Studies which organises a series of public lectures and
runs initiatives to support students working on Dante, including a
national study day on Dante and the innovative Leeds Dante podcasts. We
have a strong supervisory record on a wide variety of topics across a
range of fields, from the from the Duecento to the contemporary. Our
particular strengths lie in: Dante, Boccaccio, Petrarca; Renaissance
culture;Visual culture; Popular culture; Film studies; Cultural studies;
History and Theory of the Novel; Modern Fiction; History of the
language; Language and style of modern and contemporary authors; Crime
fiction; Multilingualism; Narratology; Stylistics; Postcolonial Italy.

The following funding opportunities are available:
1. White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities (WRoCAH) AHRC
Studentships:
The White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities (WRoCAH) is a Doctoral
Training Partnership of the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.
It is responsible for the distribution of AHRC-funded studentships for
these universities and for the coordination of a doctoral training
programme. WRoCAH is able to offer over 50 AHRC studentships per year to
candidates with a place for doctoral study at the Universities of Leeds,
Sheffield or York. For more information on the studentship and details

EU students should only apply for WRoCAH funding if they are able to
manage on a fees only award. Success in this competition may rule you
out of selection for other UoL funding which offers EU students fees and
maintenance.

2. University Research Scholarships:
Up to two University Research Scholarships are available in the Faculty
of Arts, Humanities and Cultures (English, History, LCS, PRHS). Non-UK
EU students are strongly encouraged to apply for these prestigious
awards as they provide academic fees and an annual maintenance grant
(£14,296 in Session 2016/17). Applicants must hold at least a UK Upper
Second Class Honours degree or equivalent undergraduate degree. For more

Eligibility: Applicants must have already met the University's English
Language requirements prior to registration (some School requirements
higher than University minimum). Be commencing PhD research degree study

3. Faculty of Arts Cross Disciplinary Research Scholarships (CDRS)
Two Faculty of Arts Cross Disciplinary Research Scholarships will be
available for UK/EU/International students for doctoral study commencing
in October 2017. These scholarships have been created to meet a need for
studentships for postgraduate research proposals that clearly cross two
Schools within the Faculty of Arts. Applicants must hold at least a UK
Upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent undergraduate degree.
