Chickens. 0, 1854. from the German of Eberhard. Edinburgh, 1854;
xvi, 9 - 146 pp.; publisher's blind-stamped red cloth, spine
lettered in gilt; base of spine worn and repaired, with slight
loss. * A good copy of the first edition of this translation of
Eberhard's best-selling narrative poem in German "Hannchen und
die Küchlein". Like the original, it is in verse hexameters. Our
copy was presented by the translator to the author Charles
Kingsley, bearing the ink inscription at the top of the
title-page: "To the Revd C. Kingsley from the author". Despite
the odd pagination, the text , judging by the signatures, is
complete. OFFERED TOGETHER with the first edition of Cochrane's
anonymously published translation, also into hexameters, of
Goethe's "Herman and Dorothea", London: W.H.Smith and Son, 1849;
iv, 132pp.; publisher's cloth [by Josiah Westley], professionally
rebacked with matching Victorian cloth, inner joints cracked,
stitching poor but holding. Bothy these volumes are very scarce.

Ettinger) 1789. With Title vignette by J.H. Lips and 20 hand
coloured plates after the coloured copper engravings of Georg
Melchior Kraus after drawings by Goethe und Johann Georg
Schütz.This text was later included in > and was published in a
special edition at the Easter Fair 1789 - IBA 1982, see:
Sarkowski2 605 (Ausgabe Leipzig 1966). Printed in offset by H.F.

Farblithographien versehen von Max Pfeiffer Watenphul. No. 233 of
370 signed and hand-numbered copies. With 14 lithographs by Max
Pfeiffer signed in the stone. Frankfurt am Main, Verlag Ars
Librorum, Gotthard de Beauclair 1966. folio (410 mm. x 280 mm.)
loose sheets held in publisher's orange vellum-backed linen cloth
binding with spine lettered in gilt and one of the coloured
lithographs pasted to the front board. In dark reddish brown
quarter goat's leather slip case with gilt lettering on the
spine. A dust jacket was not issued. A fine copy. Printed on
"velin d'Arches" and uncut. Five of the 14 coloured lithographs
are full-page. Signed in the colophon by Max Pfeiffer Watenphul
and Gotthard de Beauclair. 37pp. + colophon. Typeface used is
Dante-Antiqua. Ars Librorum print no. 14. The first book
ilustrated by the German artist Max Pfeiffer
Watenphul(1896-1976). Inserted are the special lge 8-vo leaflet
the publisher issued for this book with three of the
illustrations reproduced in a smaller size and the publisher's
catalogue of editions with original graphics.,  £650.00

front board, complete with the brass clasps attached to the
binding with vellum strips. A fine copy. The text, set in
Fraktur, is slightly yellowed, f.e.p. with vertical crease, paste
downs to inner boards a bit wrinkled which is usual for this

the seventeen-volume Insel edition [cf.Sarkowsky 541] in the
scarce and much-sought-after calf-leather binding. Two headbands
slightly worn, another minimally worn, small, single ink-stains
on two covers, some spines a little rubbed & very slightly
darkened, but the overall condition is very good. The following

introduced by T.J. Reed ( Professor of German at Oxford
University ) Tregynon, Newton, Powys, Gwasg Gregynog, 2000. 4to.,
quarter leather, paper covered boards, slipcase. viii, (ii),
51+(3) pages. Printed in an edition limited to 200 numbered
copies of which this one is one of the fifty copies specially
bound in quarter leather. Included is the 4-page prospectus for
the edition and a letter from the publisher to Dr. F.D. Luke
thanking him for granting the publisher to use his translations.
This book was published by Gwasg Gregynog to celebrate the 600th
anniversary of the birth of Johann Gutenberg and the 250th of
Johann Wolfgang Goethe. This collection of some forty recent
English translations of Goethe's poetry represents the breadth of
the artistic and intellectual interests of Goethe as they
developed throughout his lifetime. Illustrated with a title-page
silhouette of Goethe and typographical decoration to some of the
poems by Neil Holland. this silhouette is repeated on the front
cover (colophon states 2 but loose erratum slip corrects this )
Set in Monotype Ehrhardt and printed in two colours on mouldmade
paper from the Hahnemuhle mill at Dassel.  £75.00

Herausgegeben von Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Riemer. Six volumes,
boundin three, Berlin, Verlag von Duncker und Humblot, 1833/1834;
each volume approx. 450 pp.; early pebble-grain cloth, spines
lettered and ruled in gilt and blind, boards ruled in blind,
speckled edges; spines faded, with fading extending onto the
boards. * A fine set of the first edition of this most important
correspondence between Goethe and one of his closest friends. Its
provenance is a large private library built up in Travemuende in
the course of the 19th Century, now dispersed, for which it
appears to have been bound ca. 1850/1860. An apparently blank and
unnumbered page has been partially excised after p.362 of Volume
IV. The book is nevertheless complete, as we have ascertained by
comparing this copy with another copy of the same edition.

page. ¶*** Johann Friedrich Röhr (1777 - 1848 ) , Doktor der
Theologie, Generalsuperintendent und Oberhofprediger in Weimar.
In seinen Schriften und Predigten erklaerte er das Christentum
als reine Vernunftreligion. Roehr gilt als einer der letzten
Vertreter des theologischen Rationalismus. Dazu hielt er 1832 die
Trauerrede zur Bestattung Johann Wolfgang von Goethes in Weimar.
