lettered in gilt; base of spine worn and repaired, with slight
loss. * A good copy of the first edition of this translation of
Eberhard's best-selling narrative poem in German "Hannchen und
die Küchlein". Like the original, it is in verse hexameters. Our
copy was presented by the translator to the author Charles
Kingsley, bearing the ink inscription at the top of the
title-page: "To the Revd C. Kingsley from the author". Despite
the odd pagination, the text , judging by the signatures, is
complete. OFFERED TOGETHER with the first edition of Cochrane's
anonymously published translation, also into hexameters, of
Goethe's "Herman and Dorothea", London: W.H.Smith and Son, 1849;
iv, 132pp.; publisher's cloth [by Josiah Westley], professionally

boards. * A fine set of the first edition of this most important
correspondence between Goethe and one of his closest friends. Its
provenance is a large private library built up in Travemuende in
the course of the 19th Century, now dispersed, for which it
appears to have been bound ca. 1850/1860. An apparently blank and
unnumbered page has been partially excised after p.362 of Volume
IV. The book is nevertheless complete, as we have ascertained by
comparing this copy with another copy of the same edition.
