Subject: [BASEES-MEMBERS] MLitt degree in Russian Studies and PhD
Scholarships at the University of St Andrews
Dear all,
please find below an advert for MLitt degree in Russian Studies and PhD
Scholarships at the University of St Andrews.
The Department of Russian at the University of St Andrews invites
applications for its one year full time MLitt (Master of Letters) degree in
Russian Studies, as well as a number of Phd Scholarships.
MLitt in Russian Studies
The Master’s programme in Russian Studies offers students the opportunity to
deepen their knowledge of inter-related fields of Russian literature,
culture and history from the eighteenth century to the present day.
The Department of Russian and the Centre for Russian, Soviet, Central and
East European Studies (CRSCEES) at St Andrews offers undergraduate and
graduate programs in Russian language, literature and culture. The
Department of Russian is a flourishing community with an intake of around 60
undergraduates each year. It is ranked first in the UK for Teaching Quality
and Experience (Times University Guide 2017). With seven permanent members
of staff the Department has a proven track record of excellence in teaching
and combines this with internationally recognised research in a range of
fields including literature, cinema, and cultural studies from the
eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries.
Russian MLitt students study a number of taught modules and write a
dissertation of 15,000 words with a supervisor at the department. The taught
modules give students the opportunity to develop their skills of literary
and textual analysis through directed reading on a topic of their choice.
Potential subjects of study include: the English Novel in Russia; Issues in
Russian Cultural Memory; Narratology and the Short Story; Russian Crime
Fiction; Russian Romantic Prose; Russian and Polish Modernism; Russian
Formalism in context; Femininity, Masculinity and Queer in Russian
Literature and Culture; Russian Women Writers; Russian Enlightenment;
Russian Gothic; the Soviet Writing Self; Socialist Realism Inside and Out;
Andrei Platonov; Race and Ethnicity in Russian and Russophone Literature;
Russian Literary Peripheries; and Russian Cinema in the Putin Era.
Applications are accepted until shortly before teaching starts in September
2017. A limited number of scholarships for outstanding EU/Home candidates is
