The Statistical Ecology Modeling Group (SMEG) jointly with the Valencia Bayesian Research group (VaBaR) are organizing the 1st edition of the course “Modeling species distributions: methods and applications”, which introduces the fundamental concepts underpinning the "so-called" species distribution models (SDM). The course describes some of the most prominent methods currently in use both from a frequentist and a Bayesian approach. Throughout the course, the lectures will emphasize the limits and strengths of the species distribution model algorithms, and will be also focus on the use of presence-only, presence/absence and abundance models. The students will have the opportunity to learn how to run SDMs with the R and INLA software (http://www.r-inla.org/).
* Course Professors:
David Conesa; Antonio López Quílez; Jose María Bellido Millán; Maria Grazia Pennino; Iosu Paradinas; Joaquín Martínez Minaya
* Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, the students will learn about:
1. Formal knowledge about the main statistical approaches relating to SDMs;
2. Specific examples of SDMs with different model algorithms (GAMs, Random Forest, Boosted Regression Trees) using a frequentist approach;
3. An introduction to the Bayesian inference and modeling framework;
4. Specific examples of SDMs using a Bayesian approach and specifically the R-INLA software.
The last day participants can work with they own data and present their studies.
* Dates and logistics:
The course will take place at the University of Valencia (Burjassot), in Spain, between the 23th and the 27th of January 2017.
*Requirements:
Some experience in the computer language R is desirable, and experience with Bayesian statistic is helpful. All participants must bring their own personal laptop.
*Language:
English. However all the professors speak also Spanish.
* Fees and Participation:
The course fee is 200€ for students and 250€ for post-docs and researchers. The fee covers the lectures and the course material.
The course accepts a minimum of 10 students and maximum of 36 students selected according to the relevance of the course for their research or work.
*Cancellation policy:
If you wish to cancel your participation in this course, cancellations up to 40 days before the course start date will incur a 30% cancellation fee. For later cancellations, or non-attendance, the full course fee will be charged. In the unlikely event that the course is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, accepted candidates will either be entitled to a full refund of the course fee. The organization is not responsible for travel costs, or any other expenses incurred by the candidate as a result of such cancellation.
