The Carnegie Deli is closing on Friday after 79 years of dishing out slabs of
cured meat on rye and knishes for tourists and pleasure-seeking New Yorkers.

The Midtown Manhattan deli, which featured photos of the celebrities who had
eaten there and earned its time on the silver screen in Woody Allens 1984
Broadway Danny Rose, was a pitstop for tourists looking for knishes,
cheesecake, chopped liver, or a $20 pastrami sandwich.

Call it scorned beef! The owner of the Carnegie Deli chewed up and spit out a
last-ditch offer from a former dishwasher to buy her fabled restaurant on the
day its slated to close.

Marian Harper-Levine, the deli's president, reaffirmed her intention of
shuttering the 79-year-old deli Friday night at midnight, hours after Upper
East Side restaurateur Sammy Musovic offered $10 million to buy the eatery and
save it from closure.

Musovic had offered $5 million for the Seventh Ave. deli in October.

Just as she said after Musovic's first offer, Harper-Levine reiterated that she
wants to retain the Carnegie name so she could expand "wholesale and retail
operations" and focus on "licensed locations at Madison Square Garden, The
Mirage in Las Vegas, NV, Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, PA and during the US
Open Tennis Championships in Flushing, Queens."

Musovic, who started his restaurant career as a dishwasher at the Carnegie Deli
in the 1970s, pledged on Friday to double his initial $5 million offer, which
had also been schmeared by Harper-Levine. The deli's spokeswoman called
Musovic's offer "publicity-inspired."

"Carnegie Deli is not for sale and the family is certainly not considering any
publicity-inspired offers," the spokeswoman, Cristyne Nicholas, said in a
tongue-lashing that highlighted Harper-Levine's interest in "keeping her
father's legacy alive with quality-control through the family-owned and
operated meat processing plant and bakery in New Jersey.

Musovic blasted Harper-Levine for short-sightedness.

I'm just trying to save this landmark that's been here for nearly 100 years,"
he said, adding about 20 years to the Carnegie's illustrious history and
misspelling the name of the restaurant on a $10 million check he showed to the
press. She wont talk about it. She wants to close something that is as much a
part of New York City as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building."

Customers were on Musovic's side.

"Since I was a kid, I'd come here and get pastrami sandwiches bigger than my
head," said John Martins, 52, a native New Yorker who now lives in Bushwick.
"It's a shame that this place is closing. I've seen places come and go but some
things belong in New York City. I'll miss this place."

Tourists are drawn to the hype, of course, but also the quality.

"There's no better corned beef than Carnegie's," said Bill Nousak, 41, who says
he always gets a meal at the deli when he's in town from Jacksonville, Fla. "I
came to the city today just for this."
