I have checked and the surface areas are the same for both approaches.
However, spm_mesh_area is of course much easier to use:
spm_mesh_area(gifti(spm_select(1,'gifti','select
surface','','','[lr]h.central')))
I wasn’t aware that this spm function exists, because I sticked too
much on my CAT functions. Almost all of the CAT surface functions are in
c-code and use some BIC libraries. Good to see that the results are
identical.
