What to Drink on Election Night
I want to reach for the Maker’s Mark
Since it is so solid and old school
And settles in my throat like a soft
Scream.
I may go all gurly and choose the holiday
Bailey’s for comfort and cream
And the sweet remembrance of drinking
With my mother after her cancer.
There is always the steady red wine
From Trader Joe’s, a shiraz I believe
That Tim the wine guy suggested for
Under $5 and promised it to be much
More densely bold than two buck Chuck.
I could entice the ghost of Margo
My grandmother who would have ridden
Her three wheel bicycle to the voting
Place on Cherry Ave and who would have
Definitely worn her red lipstick in a gold
Tube that she saved from her trip to Las Vegas
She definitely would have been chugging
Jameson's in a high-ball glass with a paper
Towel around it to keep the ice cold.
