By coincidence I was looking at our use of blogs yesterday.
We don't pay for content because of blogs and website content achieving other goals.
Most of the blogs we publish on are linked to a project and the blog is maintained by all the partners involved. The expectation is that the blog is the voice of the project participants and is there to communicate their experience and findings. We have one regular blog on our collections website related to research at RAMM and the goal is improving access to collections. We have a rota for this across the Collections and Conservation team and at one post a month it is not too onerous.
Whether blog or website content we expect staff to do this as part of their regular duties. Much like answering enquiries, writing object captions, preparing exhibition copy, etc. If we were to put this under a heading it would be developing digital skills and culture. With a distributed publishing model like this maintaining common standards is a challenge. We address this with in house training and frequent reminders on using a style guide.
