I can speak for my time at Horniman. Nearly all blogs were done for free, either by staff in their work time, or by external non-museum staff people who generally had a connection to us (e.g. an artist staging an exhibition). Often with the outside people (and sometimes with staff), we developed ways to make blogging quick and easy (e.g. interviewing them, writing alongside them etc)
I only once paid for a blog - having asked a local author to write something; I paid this as he was an author (i.e. professional writer), specially commissioned by us to write something, and not especially connected to an on-going programme. We agreed a rate between us.
Ordinarily, there wouldn't have been a budget for this.
Now, at Europeana, for our Collections blog, we either write in-house or work with partners to write those. These are not paid for, and I don't think there would be budget to pay for these.

Subject: (How) do you pay for blogs & other editorial content?
Good morning all!
A question to take our collective minds off linked data for just a day or two perhaps...
(How) do you pay bloggers and other people who create editorial content for your websites?
I'm interested in how GLAMs that publish editorial content resource the writing of it. Some specific questions:
* Do you pay non-staff people who write for your blogs or produce other editorial content?
* If you don't, what's your rationale (can't afford to / other goals are being met by writers)?
* If you do, do you have flat rates per piece, or does it depend on what is being written?
* Do (rates of) payment depend on who is writing it (eg an academic promoting their work/a professional journalist)?
* Where staff write blog posts, are they expected to do it as part of their contracted hours? Are there any standard arrangements / allocations that you make for this?
If you're a non-museum staff member and you've written editorial content for museum blogs etc, what's your experience? Have you been paid, and if not what are your (positive) reasons for writing for museums (reaching an audience, promoting other work, etc)?
I'm less interested in the actual amounts paid than in your general approaches, whether they're consistent, and how they work for you? If you're running into problems, what are they?
(Confidential) off-list replies warmly welcomed, and if any interesting common issues emerge in discussion, I'll do a summary for the list.
Thanks once again for all your help, wonderful list.
Danny
