AHRC-funded PhD studentships, through the South, West and Wales DTP
We are pleased to announce this year’s round of PhD scholarships funded by the AHRC as part of the South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership. This is a consortium of eight universities (Exeter, Aberystwyth, Bristol, Bath, Bath Spa, Cardiff, Reading and Southampton) which awards up to 56 doctoral studentships across disciplines, including theatre and performance as part of the Creative and Critical Panel of the consortium.
The application process for this year’s round of awards is underway, with the Information Day about the scheme taking place on Monday 28rd November at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. Registration for this event is now open, and closes on the 13th November.
For further information, see: http://www.sww-ahdtp.ac.uk/apply-for-a-studentship/
The Department of Drama at the University of Exeter is delighted to be an active partner in the consortium, including hosting a number of successful awards from previous rounds of scholarships in the field of performance studies. We welcome applications to be supervised in the Department across the wide range of research expertise of our staff, including theatre history, dramaturgy, performance and performer training, contemporary performance practice, and interdisciplinary approaches including music, dance, anthropology and cultural theory. For a list of staff research areas, see:
http://humanities.exeter.ac.uk/drama/staff/
In particular, we welcome applications from students who would like to work collaboratively with partner organisations, such as a theatre company, museum, professional arts organisation or other relevant body or organisation. There have been a number of successful collaborative doctoral projects within the Department, and we have contacts with local companies and organisations which would lead to engaging and productive PhD projects, particularly in the field of applied theatre. If you have an existing collaboration with a particular organisation, or are interested in this type of PhD but do not currently have a partner organisation, please do contact me (details below) to discuss this further.
We welcome projects that are either fully written, or undertaken through practice. The Department has excellent state-of-the-art facilities for practical work, including large fully-equipped studies for the use of Drama students only, allowing for great flexibility of practice. Students also have access to a wide range of media equipment and IT facilities, programmes and training to develop skills in multi-media performance, as well as documentation and editing techniques for practical work.
The Department has a long established track record of successful PhD projects in a diverse range of subjects. Doctoral students become part of the research community and culture of the Department, including becoming a member of one of our Research Centres, participating in research seminars, specialist research modules and skills training workshops, as well as the opportunity for teaching experience. You will also have the opportunity of gaining teaching experience on the undergraduate programme. We have a thriving PhD community, including a large number of international students, and the quality of the research culture in the Department and across the College is a strong feature of Exeter’s reputation.
The AHRC DTP awards offer great opportunities for flexibility of study and training, along with the expertise of supervision, facilities and research culture available through the University of Exeter, in collaboration with one of the partner universities in the consortium.
