Dear Study Group Members

Please see below for a request for advice from a colleague at Cardiff University working in WISERD who is trying to construct a quantitative question about children's cultural capital for their longitudinal survey of schoolchildren accross wales. I am forwarding this on in the hope that someone in the group may have some experience of doing a similar thing and may be willing to talk to him and offer some advise or provide some example questions which they have found useful.

If you think you can help, please do drop him a line at: [log in to unmask]

Thanks and best wishes

Jessie

-----------

WISERD Education is a longitudinal study of schoolchildren across Wales (http://www.wiserd.ac.uk/wiserd-education/en/). We are going into our 5th year of surveys next school term and are developing a new survey based on what we think are gaps in the existing knowledge and building on existing areas which have yielded interesting data in the past. We ask questions about all aspects of pupil’s lives, both in school and outside; their relationships with friends and family; their aspirations, beliefs (political & religious); attitudes towards the Welsh language, and so on.

I have attached some of the most recent publications which have come out of the project as well as some of last year’s surveys if anyone is interested.

One of the main areas I am interested in is students’ cultural capital and confidence, and I am interested in developing more questions which can maybe try to reveal habitus (both familial, institutional, individual) and the ‘fit’ between the pupils and schools. Obviously I’m aware that these issues are very hard to capture qualitatively, let alone in a questionnaire, but if anyone has any experience of surveys which get at this issue I’d be interested to hear from them.

Thanks again,

Dan
