Identifying and Caring for Archive Photographs
10.00am-12.00pm 25th January 2017
Christie Room, John Rylands Library, 150 Deansgate, Manchester M3 3EH
Can you spot a calotype? Do you know the difference between a magic lantern slide and a glass plate negative? Have you got anything explosive in your archive!
Knowing more about archive photographs can serve many different purposes, from dating a photograph or its subject matter, to authenticating its provenance, or to determining suitable preservation measures. Photographs are significant types of material culture that can help you to find new ways of engaging with - and developing - audiences.
The identification of photographs can be daunting, as throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, many processes appeared and many passed out of fashion. This half day workshop aims to take the mystery out of identifying and caring for archive photographs, drawing on the fascinating photographic collections of the John Rylands Library.
