The Behaviour and Health Research Unit (BHRU) is funded as a policy research unit by the Department of Health. The BHRU generates evidence on effective and acceptable ways to change behaviour to improve health and to reduce health inequalities, focusing specifically on four sets of behaviours: excessive consumption of alcohol, poor diet, physical inactivity and tobacco-smoking. Together, these negative behaviours contribute to most of the deaths worldwide attributed to non-communicable diseases. For further details on the Behaviour and Health Research Unit, follow the link to our website: http://www.bhru.iph.cam.ac.uk/.
We are now seeking to appoint a post-doctoral statistician to lead on data analysis and study design across a range of experiments being undertaken at the BHRU.
The successful candidate will work under the direction of Professor Theresa Marteau joining a team of researchers from a variety of disciplines including psychologists, behavioural economists, neuroscientists, and nutritionists, primarily located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and working for the University of Cambridge.
Your main role will be to support and lead on the analysis of secondary and primary datasets to examine predictors of a range of health-related behaviours and the impact of interventions designed to improve these. Your other tasks will be to contribute to progress reports and the production of publications in peer-reviewed journals, present research findings and take an active role in the research activities of the Unit.
With the range of projects underway at the BHRU there will be many opportunities to become a co-author on publications.
The successful candidate will have a first degree in a numerate discipline with a PhD in Statistics or related discipline, or substantial experience working as a statistician. A second degree (Masters or PhD level), relevant to the job description or equivalent experience. The postholder will have expertise in analysing various types of outcomes (binary/multinomial/ordinal/discrete), modelling dependent data, and in study design (incl. sample size calculations and power analyses). He/she will be fluent in a statistical programming language (preferably R or STATA), be highly organised, responsible, capable of using own initiative, and able to work to often demanding deadlines.
This post is funded in the first instance to 31 December 2018
