This post is available for a three-year term, with the possibility of extension subject to the
availability of funding. You will join the CHICAS research group in Lancaster University’s
Medical School, to work with Prof Peter Diggle and colleagues on three collaborative research
projects involving the development and application of spatial and spatio-temporal statistical
methods, as follows:
1.Mathematical modelling and spatial data analysis to inform TB care and control strategies
in high TB incidence settings
To work with mathematical modellers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine,
and overseas collaborators in South Africa, Zambia, and Malawi, on projects to understand
the spatial distribution and transmission and transmission pattern of TB cases, and develop
spatially targeted TB intervention approaches for use in high incidence settings.
2.Spatial Models of Intrahepatic hepatitis C virus (HCV) propagation in humans
To work with biomedical scientists at Los Alamos, USA, formulating and fitting
spatio-temporal statistical models for the spread of HCV particles in the human
liver, using data from human liver biopsies.
3.Community-based malaria control in the perimeter of Majete Wildlife Reserve
To work with epidemiologists and entomologists in Malawi in an ongoing project whose
aims are to monitor malaria prevalence and mosquito abundance in rural communities
in southern Malawi, and to evaluate the effects of community-level control interventions.
The role will involve frequent (fortnightly) travel to London during the first year of appointment,
and occasional travel to the USA and to Malawi.
CHICAS conducts research in biostatistics, epidemiology and health informatics. The group
includes eight academic staff, six research staff and 15 research students. For more
