Hi Shiv
At Westminster we’re currently building a web governance approach around an ‘ecosystem’ of three areas using a garden analogy.
Walled garden:
The content of the walled garden can be expected to be carefully cultivated and planned. Example of digital assets that fit into this area of web governance include the university website, intranet and corporate social media channels. Assets within the walled garden are managed by content owners and overseen by the Digital Communications Team and the Web Governance Board.
Wildflower garden:
Content in a wildflower garden develops organically, but with some direction. Example of digital assets that fit into this area of web governance include research microsites, Wordpress blogs, social media accounts of academics and members of staff. Assets within the wildflower garden are managed by content owners across the University, and take direction from the Digital Content Team on best practices, legal compliance and branding. Training is also available to help content owners develop their skills and enhance their content.
Meadow (used to be called the Wilderness but we decided Meadow was more ‘inclusive’ ;-):
Content in the meadow is free to grow and develop naturally and without direction or intervention. Example of digital assets that fit into this area of web governance include partner research enterprises, external venues like Regent Street Cinema and academics’ own web pages. The University doesn’t exert any general control over the assets’ content, messaging, maintenance or design. However, these digital assets have a partnership connection to the University and in order to cultivate a mutually beneficial partnership, as such there are minimum requirements for University logo usage and backlinks.
The technical solutions are then implemented accordingly. The Walled garden is on our main Drupal site. The Wildflower garden is supported via the Wordpress sites mentioned by Maret earlier on this thread.
Cheers
Oliver

We have our central CMS that hosts the majority of our content. Recently we have seen a rise in the number of Wordpress sites popping up created and managed by departments and academics, bypassing our CMS.
Has anyone had any success in controlling this? From a web management and brand point of view we would like everything on our main domain and branded correctly but currently we are facing the issue of separate domains and subdomains being created and non-branded websites going Live.
Can anyone share any guidelines in managing this?
