<!--#yiv4441704216 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;}-->Dear colleagues,
May i request that the wider community contributes ideas/inputs for the "Geography 2050: Envisioning a Sustainable Planet" [1] organised by the American Geographical Society [2] . Established in 1851, the American Geographical Society is the oldest professional geographical organization in the United States. It is recognized world-wide as a pioneer in geographical research and education in geography for over 163 years. The mission of AGS is to advance geographic knowledge and the recognition of its importance in the contemporary world. AGS provides leadership to frame the national discussion of the growing importance of geography and geo-spatial tools.
"Geography 2050: Envisioning a Sustainable Planet" seeks to bring the best minds together to map and shape a future where our ecosystems and vital resources are conserved and sustainably managed for the betterment of humankind and the Earth.
I am requesting all colleagues to contribute for this important event. You can contribute your ideas and insights through email, social media etc (details below) . For more details contact Dr. Christopher Tucker (Chair , American Geographical Society). I am grateful to each and every colleague for their hardwork and dedication for our mission for building a better world and better future for all our future generations.
Best wishes,
Suchith

GeoForAll Community,
If you happen to be free to attend this event in NYC, Nov 17th & 18th, we would love to have you in attendance at Geography2050 (www.geography2050.org ). Please spread the word to all of your conservation minded friends, particularly those who think geographically! See below for details! Also, see the attached fliers that you can send around.
Also, you may enjoy this. We have asked that everyone identify the geographies (you know, with actual polygons!) over which various conservation, restoration or sustainability strategies must be deployed in order for us to meet out collective societal goals by 2050. In his new book Half-Earth (https://www.amazon.com/Half-Earth-Our-Planets-Fight-Life/dp/1631490826 ), E.O. Wilson says that we must dedicate half of the surface of the Earth to nature if our planet is to avoid the mass extinction that is underway. Is he correct? You be the judge. But, for sure, only 15% of the Earth’s land is formally protected, and only 2.8% of the ocean by surface area (see the UNEP/IUCN World Database on Protected Areas).
Articulate the geographies that you think need to be conserved, restored, or otherwise made sustainable. Do it with geographic data. And tweet it to @geography2050, and email the data to [log in to unmask] Make sure to include some text to make your case. Even include citations if you want to give your argument some rigor.
The GeoForAll community spans the globe, and you and your colleagues have a lot of local knowledge. And, I know many of you are focused on the environment, conservation, and sustainability. So, please be vocal and share your insights!!!
Anyways, we would love your participation in person and through your contribution of data and insights over the WWW.
Thanks!
Chris
