SURVEY APPEAL: Final call for the 2016 survey of the Demographics and Research Interests of the UK Astronomy and Geophysics Communities
Thank you to those of you who have already completed our survey of the Demographics and Research Interests of the UK Astronomy and Geophysics Communities. The survey responses will help us get an accurate picture of who in the UK is working in research in astronomy, solar system science and geophysics.
We would like to hear from you if you are permanent academic staff, a long term visitor, research support staff, postdoctoral research staff or postgraduate research students
You’ll find the survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/RAS_Survey_2016
Following the EU referendum result, the data are even more important, as we need to assess the UK’s usage of international facilities, and the proportion of students and staff who are nationals of other EU countries. So please do make the time to complete the survey.

FUN KIDS RADIO
Fun Kids - the UK’s radio station for children and their families – has been awarded an UK Space Agency ‘Space Exploration Education Award’ to create a multi-media project to help children aged 7 to 12 learn about the Aurora programme for robotic exploration of Mars. Fun Kids will create 15 short audio programmes for broadcast which will introduce children to the what, how and why of the Aurora programme and discover elements of the UK’s involvement, explore some of the issues of developing and sending robots into space, and discover some of the careers within the space sector.
To help ensure what Fun Kids creates is relevant for a child and wider public audience, Fun Kids would like to find some space experts from RAS Fellows to act as ‘Project Ambassadors’ to help ensure it delivers great public engagement and maximises the benefits to those who participate across all elements of the project.

19 October 2016, 10.00-16.30
Hallam Conference Centre, 44 Hallam Street, London W1W 6JJ
The STFC, the Institute of Physics and the Royal Astronomical Society are organising a special careers event for STFC-funded early career researchers.
Aimed particularly at STFC-funded PhD students in their second, third or fourth years and at STFC-funded postdoctoral researchers, this event will give an insight into the broad range of career paths open to STFC PhD-holders.
This event aims to help, inspire and motivate you to explore the careers options open to you in a welcoming and friendly environment. You will hear from a range of speakers, all holders of PhDs in nuclear physics, astronomy or particle physics, who have gone on to pursue interesting, successful careers in diverse areas – both in and outside academia.
The well-known particle physicist Professor Jon Butterworth will provide the keynote address and there will then be parallel sessions throughout the day, featuring speakers from the worlds of finance, government, management consultancy, academia, technology development and data science. You will be asked to choose which sessions to attend.
Speakers include:
Nicky Agius, Home Office
Simon Badger, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Edinburgh
Adam Davison, The Economist
Debbie Morgan, Debbie Morgan Consulting Ltd
Adam Nichols, Office for Nuclear Regulation
Phil Rosenberg, School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds
Bruce Sibthorpe, Airbus Defence and Space
Susan Vu, Reinsurance Group of America
Vishanti Fox, careers and CPD manager for the IOP will deliver a presentation on CVs and interview skills.
There will be plenty of opportunity to network and talk informally to the speakers during the day. Lunch will be provided and we will be hosting a networking/drinks reception at the end.
This event is free to attend and travel costs will be met by STFC. You will be required to pay a £30.00 registration fee, but this will be reimbursed, along with your travel costs, if you attend.

A & G FORUM
Fellows are invited to contribute to the new website A&G Forum (aandg.org). This website comes out of our fellowship magazine A&G and is a place for Fellows to share details of their outreach and education activities, forthcoming events, news and anything likely to be of interest, primarily to other Fellows. The site is visible to the public, but only Fellows can contribute; it is hoped that the wide audience garnered by A&G on-line will also enjoy finding out more about Fellows' activities. It will also serve as a record of the wide and varied work of Fellows in outreach, especially. Anyone in receipt of an RAS Grant is especially welcome to share details of their work.
You need to register in order to contribute, and contributions are moderated before publishing, but we're happy to have your images, videos, links to websites and general news...Get in touch through the site if you are unsure of whether your item will be suitable.

CALL FOR ARTICLES FOR ASTRONOMY AND GEOPHYSICS
Have you considered writing an article about your work for the Society's magazine, Astronomy and Geophysics?
The Editor is looking for news items and topical review papers, communicating advances in your field to the many interested fellows working in related areas within the RAS sciences. If you wish to write a review paper, the Editor is looking for up to 6000 words plus figures and images, discussing an aspect of science within the RAS remit. A&G does not publish original research, but rather authors should refer to key publications in the peer reviewed literature. Although a serious scientific core to articles is expected, the Editor also likes papers that engage and intrigue, as well as inform, the reader.
If you are interested in writing for A&G, please do not hesitate to contact the Editor, Dr Sue Bowler, at [log in to unmask] , or simply submit your manuscript at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/astrogeo
