Fully funded PhD and postdoc positions are available in the group of Jeremy Richardson at the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, ETH Zurich. The successful applicant will develop new methods for including quantum nuclear effects into simulations of chemical systems. The approaches we use are based on approximations to Feynman's path-integral description of quantum mechanics and include ring-polymer molecular dynamics and instanton methods. Of particular interest is the extension of these to treat nonadiabatic dynamics where the Born-Oppenheimer approximation is not valid.
Projects will be tailored to suit the skills and interests of the applicants. Possible research topics include:
- development of nonadiabatic ring-polymer molecular dynamics
- development of nonadiabatic rate theory and application to proton-coupled electron transfer reactions
- implementation of instanton theory into i-pi
- studies of quantum tunnelling effects in condensed phases
Applicants for PhD studentships should have (or be about to finish) a Master's degree. Previous experience with research in quantum dynamics is welcome but not required. However, the student should explain their interest in pursuing a PhD in theoretical molecular quantum dynamics and describe their mathematical and computational abilities.
Postdoctoral applicants should hold (or be about to finish) a PhD in a related field and should have experience in programming. For certain projects, experience with electronic structure calculations will also be advantageous.
The starting date for both positions is flexible. The selection process starts immediately and the evaluation of applications will continue until the position is filled. An early application is thus recommended.
