Dear all
Please find below details of the BSA Human Reproduction Winter event ‘Abortion: past, present and future’.
The event is being held at De Montfort University, Leicester on Monday 5th December.
The passing of the 1967 Abortion Act nearly 50 years ago was an important point in the reproductive lives of British women. Whilst far from perfect, including the exclusion of Northern Ireland, it sent out an important message that biology is not necessarily destiny. Debates around abortion go much deeper than the question of terminating a pregnancy. Issues such as medicalization, religious sensibilities, the role of the state and disability rights all structure access and availability as well as women’s experiences
This half day event brings together three invited speakers from Sociology, History and Reproductive Health to examine the past, present and future of abortion in the UK and to illustrate the centrality of abortion to wider understandings of women’s position in society.

Dr Clare Parker, University of Kent
