Dear MedSoc colleagues,
We are thrilled to invite you to the Lancaster Community Book Event for “So much to be done: The writings of breast cancer activist Barbara Brenner”
“What kind of cancer is it?” was thefirst question Barbara Brenner asked her doctor after hearing that the lump inher breast was malignant. His answer: “You don't need to know that.” Wrongresponse. Brenner, who was already an anti-war and LGBT rights activist, madeknowing her business and spreading knowledge her mission. She was the powerbehind the San Francisco-based grassroots organization Breast Cancer Action andits transformative Think Before You Pink® campaign.
A self-defined “hell-raiser”, Brennerbrought an abundance of wit, courage, and clarity to the cause and foreverchanged the conversation. She confronted dominant theories of disease causationthat overemphasise individual responsibility to “make healthy choices” andmammography screening. She also reframed the discourse of prevention byexamining the links between cancer and socio-economic and environmentalfactors. Collected in "So Much to Be Done", and framed by personalaccounts of Barbara and her influential work, Brenner’s columns and blog postsform a chronicle of breast cancer research and health care activism that is asinspiring as it is informative.
We take delight in having Susi Lampert, Barbara’s partner of 38 years,to speak in Lancaster as a part of a series of events across the UK and Europe.
