Dear colleagues,
We are thrilled to invite you to the book launch of Barbara Brenner’s posthumousfascinating book “Somuch to be done”.
“What kind of cancer is it?” was the first question Barbara Brennerasked her doctor after hearing that the lump in her breast was malignant. Hisanswer: “You don't need to know that.” Wrong response. Brenner, who was alreadyan anti-war and LGBT rights activist, made knowing her business and spreadingknowledge her mission. She was the power behind the San Francisco-basedgrassroots organization Breast Cancer Action and its transformative ThinkBefore You Pink® campaign.
Brenner brought an abundance of wit, courage, and clarity to the causeand forever changed the conversation. She confronted dominant theories ofdisease causation that overemphasise individual responsibility to “make healthychoices” and mammography screening and reframed the discourse of prevention byexamining the links between cancer incidence and mortality and social, economicand environmental factors. Collected in "So Much to Be Done", andframed by personal accounts of Barbara and her influential work, Brenner’scolumns and blog posts form a chronicle of breast cancer research and healthcare activism that is as inspiring as it is informative.
We take delight in having Susi Lampert, Barbara Brenner’s partner of 38years, to speak in Lancaster as a part of a series of events across the UK andEurope. All welcome!
