Vacancy reference: JM/NHM/PDRAQPX

Location: South Kensington

Employment type: Fixed Term

Area of business: Earth Sciences
Closing date: 31/10/2016

Role description:
The Department of Earth Sciences at the Natural History Museum hosts full-time researchers in anthropology, palaeontology, mineral and planetary sciences and economic and environmental earth sciences (EEES). It therefore has a spectrum of activity distinct from University departments that supports the museum's mission to use its unique collections and unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. EEES researchers are involved in interpreting the formation processes of ore deposits and investigating best practice for their sustainable exploration, mining and processing. The LODE group (London Centre for Ore Deposits and Exploration; http://www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/our-work/sustainability/lode.html) sits within this Division and is the focus for our exciting and novel work on ore deposit geoscience and development of exploration tools for the mining industry. Much of the analytical work is done in the Core Research Laboratories (CRL) which houses state of the art analytical chemistry facilities within its Imaging and Analysis Centre (IAC) Division. These facilities are staffed by experts in analytical chemistry and geochemistry as well as other areas and provide chemical analyses for internal researchers and users, external visitors and commercial clients. The LODE LA-ICP-MS facility sits within this division and provides core analytical support for LODE research projects and industry sponsors.

The post holder will be responsible for the field collection of samples and the analysis and interpretation of whole rock and mineral chemistry data in collaboration with the project sponsor Quantum Pacific Exploration. He/she will conduct sample petrography of igneous rocks using optical and SEM-based techniques, mineral analyses by analytical SEM, electron microprobe and LA-ICP-MS, and will be responsible for a large sample throughput and the processing and collation of large datasets. He/she may also be involved in sample preparation where necessary. Petrogeneic modelling of rock compositions will be carried out to understand the chemistry of accessory minerals in the context of magmatic evolution with the goal of identifying and understanding signals that discriminate magmatic suites that are fertile with respect to porphyry ore deposit genesis. The role will require working to tight deadlines with strict reporting requirements to the sponsor, involving written reports and knowledge exchange workshops at their head office in Chile. Meticulous attention to detail is required even for routine work. There will be a need for development of new analytical protocols and validation of methods using appropriate standards and experiments. Publication of results in high profile international journals will be required. Wider involvement in the LODE group, such as via supervision of PhD and MSci students, and in public engagement activities will be expected. This role will be challenging but offers the post-holder an exceptional opportunity to be involved in this frontier field of exploration geochemistry, interfacing closely with industry, with an award-winning team.

Salary: From £32,500 (depending on experience) per annum plus benefits

Contract: Fixed term, 23 months

Application Close Date: 9am, Monday 31 October 2016

3. Knowledge of porphyry-type ore deposits, igneous petrology and petrogenetic modelling methods
4. Knowledge and experience of sample preparation, involving cutting, grinding, polishing, crushing, picking and mounting
5. Experience of SEM-EDS, Electron microprobe and LA-ICP-MS techniques
6. Experience of managing and manipulating large datasets
7. Experience of the use of statistical methods for data analysis
