Hi all,
It's been sometime since I have posted on here, whether in response to something or a post of my own. Prior to posting today I've been thinking of my journey with community approaches, and critical approaches too. At first I found myself not being able to access the power, or recognising what power I had to influence and create change, I now find myself in a position of power (which is still somewhat unsettling!) and now not being fully certain of how to best shape a service within the constraints of what I'm being told to provide. Therefore I find myself here, asking for some help to guide my thinking.
I'm currently in a position to shape what kind of service is provided to young adults who are in prison and who are also deemed to have an 'emerging personality disorder'. Here is the first point of action, luckily the team agree that we do not go down the route of using diagnostic labels, nor do we want to entertain the idea of 'emerging personality disorder'. So a good starting point I think.
Mostly (I'd go as far as saying all....) the young adults have had a severe traumatic history, including emotional/social deprivation. The reality is that they are more than likely to have challenging futures too, given the approach society has to ex-offenders. I want to help provide a service that supports young adults (who have committed serious offences) engage better with the world, in a way that they can feel safe. Importantly, to also help shape the prison in which this service is located to better engage with the world, my grand hope being that we can build better links to outside the walls too.
I just don't know where to start, it feels more challenging being in a prison, but I imagine it is a similar process in the community.
I'd appreciate any ideas, or questions just to help me think.
Thanks
Abdullah
