PhD studentship (fee waiver) in “Technology for Music-mediated Interventions in Dementia”.
Reading Univ.

Project Overview:
This PhD is an exciting interdisciplinary project at the interface of Biomedical Engineering and Clinical and Experimental Psychology at the University of Reading. The student will work closely with clinicians and patients to investigate a computer-based music-mediated activity that can be used at home by dementia patients.

Applicants are encouraged to submit research proposals that relate to this topic, and that also appeal to their particular strengths and interests. Research challenges of interest include, but are not limited to, designing new methods to recognise automatically a person’s cognitive state, possibly from biosignals such as electroencephalogram (EEG), in order to tailor the intervention to the person, and developing user-centred design approaches to ensure the system is easy-to-use for people with motor and cognitive impairments.

University of Reading:
The University of Reading is ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world, according to the QS World University Rankings 2016–17. Biomedical Engineering is a section within the School of Biological Sciences, providing excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary training and collaboration. You will be joining a vibrant and friendly team of researchers who are passionate about using engineering skills and knowledge to address important healthcare and health science challenges. We have a strong international reputation in areas including mathematics, cybernetics, consumer electronics, computing, human-computer interaction, robotics, medical physics, and neuroscience.
