=== Details ===
An exciting new position has become available to join the newly formed SCHI (‘sky’) Lab at the School of Engineering and Informatics of the University of Sussex, to assist in the development of new scent-based applications and interfaces.
The group is dedicated to pursue highly ambitious frontier research that involves creating novel prototypes and user interfaces based on touch, taste, and smell stimulation. This research is supported by the European excellence scheme funded by the ERC.
The primary goal of this project is to explore the opportunities of smell in interactive systems, in order to create new interactive experiences in the automotive and VR context.
Applicants will be involved in a variety of tasks:
• specification of the software architecture, design patterns
• user interface and widget design for specific use cases
• coordination of the software and hardware integration and device prototyping
The applicant will be expected to contribute to the dissemination of the research through demonstrations of the work at academic and public events (e.g., CES 2018).
Ideal candidates would have experience with the technical aspects of one or more of the following areas:
• skills in software design patterns
• user interface design (e.g., widgets design)
• experience in multi-threading and concurrent programming
• language processors (compilers/interpreters)
• programming in c++ (desirable)
• experience with hardware integration, physical prototyping will be highly valued
We seek a highly organised and motivated individual able to multi-task and work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining excellent attention to detail and bring energy and enthusiasm to a vibrant research group.
The SCHI Lab is internationally renowned for its research in multisensory experiences and the exploitation of touch, taste, and smell as future interaction modalities in human-computer interaction (HCI). HCI is about applying human abilities to the design of tools, systems, and environments that are safe, effective and comfortable for use.
The Lab consists of Dr. Obrist as permanent staff member alongside 3 post-doctoral researchers, 3 PhD students and a research technician. The work of lab members often attracts media attention and offers many public engagement opportunities.
Employment will be subject to the right to work in the UK. You will work directly with Dr. Obrist and the postdoctoral researcher Dr Maggioni, with a base in the Department of Informatics. You can find more information about the group at www.multi-sensory.info
