Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Literature at Newcastle University:
a workshop for prospective MLitt and PhD students

Newcastle University’s School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics invites applicants considering a postgraduate research degree in C18 and Romantic literature in September 2017 to a workshop on Wednesday 26 October from 1030 to 1530.

Funding is available to attend the workshop, which will include:

•	application information on two funded PG Research Associateships: collaborate in staff-led research projects during 2017-18;
•	a class at Newcastle University Library's Special Collections: find out how we can support your archival and manuscript research;
•	a presentation from a current PhD student on international placement opportunities;
•	a session on 'The PhD and beyond': shape your research proposal; meet potential supervisors; find out about funding opportunities at Newcastle; discover how we can help kick-start your career within or outside academia.

Our staff have extensive expertise in Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Literature. We work in European languages as well as English and welcome comparatist research projects. We have particular research interests in:

•	Writing and Revolution
•	Romantic Poetry
•	Drama & Theatre Studies
•	Popular Print Culture
•	Women’s Writing
•	Scottish and Irish Romanticism
•	Children's Literature
•	Scholarly Editing
•	Robert Burns
•	James Hogg
•	Britain's 'first family of writers' (Wollstonecraft; Godwin, Mary Shelley; Percy Shelley)

For further details, please see the web pages of Matthew Grenby, James Harriman-Smith, Laura Kirkley, Meiko O'Halloran, Jennifer Orr and Michael Rossington here: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/elll/staff

Our staff and research students work with some of the greatest collections of manuscripts & rare books in the world. As well as impressive collections in Newcastle, we have strong links with: The Bodleian Library; The Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and his Circle in the New York Public Library; The Wordsworth Trust; Keat-Shelley House, Rome, where our students can do placements.

In addition to the outstanding facilities and support for postgraduate training and development in the School and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, research students benefit from the North East Forum in Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Studies https://northeastforum.wordpress.com/ and the AHRC Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership http://www.northernbridge.ac.uk which connect you with other researchers in C18 and Romantic Literature at universities in North East England and Northern Ireland.

Places at this workshop are limited. To apply, you need to email Laura Kirkley and Michael Rossington by Friday 14 October at 1700 with the following:

(i) an outline of academic qualifications that demonstrates First Class achievement in a relevant BA(Hons) and/or Distinction level achievement in a relevant Master's;
(ii) an outline of no more than 250 words to include an original research idea for a PhD or Master's by Research (MLitt) and your sense of why you think Newcastle University is the place to pursue it.

We shall notify applicants as soon as possible after this date whether they have been offered a place.

The School will reimburse up to a maximum of £100 (standard class rail or air fare) in travel costs. A buffet lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Please direct informal inquiries to Laura Kirkley ([log in to unmask]) or Michael Rossington ([log in to unmask]).
