Join Professor Tanser’s research group: outstanding postdoctoral scientists wanted for cutting-edge HIV research (Three posts).
The Africa Centre for Population Health has merged with the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for TB-HIV (K-RITH) to form the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI), one of South Africa’s largest independent research institutes.
The unification of these local institutes brings together the basic science research of K-RITH and the population based surveillance and health intervention of the Africa Centre into a new interdisciplinary research institute. We aim to become a source of fundamental discoveries into the susceptibility, transmission and cure of HIV and TB and related diseases, seeking ways to improve diagnosis, prevention and treatment. AHRI is committed to motivating young scientists to address the crises of TB and HIV by expanding the science education opportunities in the region as well as strengthening the TB and HIV research capabilities of scientists across Africa.
These postdoctoral positions will form part of a larger cutting-edge research initiative that aims to drive back the HIV epidemic and its negative consequences in the communities in sub-Saharan Africa hardest hit by the epidemic. The successful candidates will join Professor Tanser’s research group and will be supervised by scientists who are leaders in their respective fields and who have access to a large international network of collaborators. The incumbents will be part of an outstanding multi-disciplinary team of statisticians, epidemiologists, mathematical modellers, social scientists, clinical trialists, bioinformaticians and other experts from diverse fields to answer the most pressing problems in HIV today. Successful candidates will receive a generous tax-free stipend for two years and be afforded numerous opportunities and support to launch their own independent research careers through the attainment of fellowship funding.
Candidates will be based at our state-of-the-art laboratories in the beautiful city of Durban, which is a sub-tropical city on the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa.
The minimum qualifications and experience required for these research posts are:
• PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Econometrics, Mathematical Modelling, Spatial Analytics or a closely related quantitative field
• Several high quality publications
• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
Big Mac Index
According to the Economist (July 21, 2016), the implied South African - Dollar exchange rate using the Big Mac index is R5.95. This means that if you want to get an idea of the purchasing power parity in dollars, you should divide the advertised salary amount by R5.95 rather than the current exchange rate (which was R14.30 at the time of posting).
