We have recently moved a multisite installation with 180+ sites to wpengine, and have another 2-3 multisite installations and another 80+ single site installations to move there. The intention is to host all wordpress sites on wpengine eventually, with as many as possible in multisite environments.
As the billing at wpengine is based on unique visitors/month, this suits a large number of low traffic sites (such as those for research projects, conferences, etc.). One of the main reasons for going offsite with the service was security - a lot of installations here were not being updated and so posed a significant security risk on the network (although this is still a problem in some respects - it is no longer our problem), and there was a lot of bogus traffic to the wordpress installations (bots fishing for plugins/themes with known vulnerabilities) which affected performance - this traffic is filtered at the firewall by wpengine.

Peter
