TUESDAY, Sept. 6, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- Infants delivered by cesarean
section may face a higher risk of becoming obese, a new study suggests.

.

These babies had a 15 percent higher risk of becoming obese in childhood,
compared with those born vaginally. The risk was even more pronounced
within families, where children born by cesarean delivery were 64 percent
more likely to become obese than their siblings who were born via vaginal
delivery, the researchers said.

.

"What makes our findings compelling and different from previous studies
addressing this question is that this was also true when we compared
siblings who differed in type of delivery -- one was born by cesarean and
the other by vaginal delivery -- and when restricted to women without any
known risk factors for having a cesarean, some of whom may have undergone
an elective cesarean," said lead researcher Dr. Jorge Chavarro. He is an
associate professor in the departments of nutrition and epidemiology at
Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

.

The researchers also found that children born vaginally to women who had
previously had a cesarean delivery were 31 percent less likely to be
obese, compared with children born to women who had several cesarean
deliveries.

.

But these findings only show an association between cesarean delivery and
childhood obesity, not cause and effect.

.

Chavarro, however, believes the association is very strong. "These
results, and in particular those regarding discordant siblings, strongly
suggest that the association between cesarean delivery and childhood
obesity is real, rather than an issue of inadequate control for shared
causes as we and others had proposed," he said.

.

As important as cesareans are, they are not without risks, Chavarro noted.
"Our results point to a risk to children that is preventable in the case
of cesareans that are strictly elective or when an indication is not
clear," he said.

.

The report was published online Sept. 6 in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

Importance Cesarean birth has been associated with higher risk of obesity
in offspring, but previous studies have focused primarily on childhood
obesity and have been hampered by limited control for confounders.

.

Objective To investigate the association between cesarean birth and risk
of obesity in offspring.

.

snip

.

Exposure Birth by cesarean delivery.

.

Main Outcomes and Measures Risk of obesity based on International Obesity
Task Force or World Health Organization body mass index cutoffs, depending
on age. Secondary outcomes included risks of obesity associated with
changes in mode of delivery and differences in risk between siblings whose
modes of birth were discordant.

.

snip

.

Conclusions and Relevance Cesarean birth was associated with offspring
obesity after accounting for major confounding factors. Although
additional research is needed to clarify the mechanisms underlying this
association, clinicians and patients should weigh this risk when
considering cesarean delivery in the absence of a clear indication.

.

Key Points
.

Question Is cesarean delivery associated with obesity in offspring from
childhood through young adulthood?

.

Findings In this cohort study, individuals born by cesarean delivery were
15% more likely to become obese during follow-up than those born by
vaginal delivery; those born via cesarean delivery had 64% higher odds of
obesity compared with their siblings born via vaginal delivery. Vaginal
birth after cesarean birth was associated with a 31% lower risk of
offspring obesity compared with those born via repeat cesarean delivery.

.

Meaning These findings support the hypothesis that the association between
cesarean delivery and offspring obesity is a true effect whose underlying
mechanisms still need to be determined.
