This is an exciting new post in the growing Academic Partnerships team, playing a key role to further strengthen and embed societal engagement across Imperial College London. The post-holder will help our staff, students and alumni to engage diverse audiences more effectively, by providing high-quality training and support in evaluation and research impact through engagement; advising researchers on how to incorporate public engagement in their work; and measuring overall institutional success and performance in societal engagement.
Societal engagement is a core part of Imperial’s mission ‘to achieve enduring excellence in research and education in science, engineering, medicine and business for the benefit of society.’ This is reflected in our 2015-20 Strategy, which commits the College ‘to sharing the wonder and importance of what we do’ with schools, patients, local communities and the wider public through two-way learning and collaboration.
The Societal Engagement Framework, launched in 2016, brings all this work together by providing a coordinated action plan and delivery structure for strengthening how we recognise, support and embed engagement across the College. A key feature is evaluation and impact: we want to be more effective in monitoring and evaluating societal engagement activity to improve our practice, evidencing its impact, and incorporating in measures of research impact.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is passionate and experienced in engaging a range of public audiences, confident in delivering training and support, and who has a highly developed understanding of engagement evaluation methods. The post-holder will operate as internal engagement consultant, working with colleagues across departments and faculties to provide tailored and practical support for evaluating impact and incorporating engagement into practice.
It is crucial for the post-holder to be proactive and independent, with an ability to work effectively with colleagues both internally and externally. Prioritisation of a wide-ranging work schedule will be fundamental to success. The successful candidate will be up-to-date with trends and developments in public engagement with research and have some specialist knowledge and prior experience in evaluation techniques and/or qualitative research.
