Dear All
Colleagues across the areas of political communication, television studies and media history are sure to be interested in Anthony Ridge-Newman's forthcoming book "‘The Tories and Television, 1951-1964: Broadcasting an Elite" (published as part of the series Palgrave Studies in the History of the Media, Oct 2016).
Winston Churchill avoided it; Anthony Eden wanted to control it; Harold Macmillan tried to master it; Alec Douglas-Home was barely PM long enough to grasp it. Ridge-Newman produces an informed exploration of the changing role of and oscillating attitudes towards television among the Tories of the 1950s and early 1960s.
Drawing upon rich and diverse source materials from the Conservative Party Archive, the book spans the impact of television at different points in the party’s history, at both grassroots and elite levels.
