As an ‘agency’
I prefer to build a prototype and populate it with content - ideally this is where the client would get practice updating the CMS, but instead…
What we get is emails, word documents and vague phone calls.
rarely does a client manage to create content that can be simply pasted into place.
Our fault I’m sure, but a website is simply a structured document broken up into pages with the added bonus of links between sections and moving pictures, so clients, please write a story.
Things I wish clients wouldn’t do.
* attempt a layout in Word.
* embed images into Word and assume that they will be a simple drop in for the site.
* Copy and paste from the website and then edit it and send the edited version via email.
What could they do?
* send links to layouts they like and explain what it is about the layout that they feel would work for them…
e.g. we like this layout because the three images in a row with blurb underneath at the top of the page will work very well with the three images and blurb paragraphs attached.
* send plain text documents (better still markdown formatted) with the words for the story they are telling. Have a page for each page on the website, give it an obvious title, make the words suitable for the Internet.
* for edits do this in email
on the about us page, please replace this sentence:
Together we’re dedicated to illustrating for all the importance of the sea, ships, time and the stars and their relationship with people
with this sentence:
Together we’re dedicated to illustrating for everyone the importance of the sea; ships; time and the stars and their relationship with people throughout history.
I like the workflow you describe - does it work?
:o)
