There may be good reason for requiring an experienced examiner - we, for example, have large programmes with teams of examiners. If we had, say, a team of six, of which four were new, then we'd want to ensure they were supported by experienced examiners. I don't think that's ridiculous at all - to do otherwise means we'd be failing to support the new examiners appropriately. Similarly, if we needed an examiner for a new undergrad programme but were aware that the team were putting together an MRes, for example, then we'd probably ask for someone with a PhD so as to cover the MRes work as well - or not, depending on the discipline.

100% agree. I really don't see what the problem is. We all get a ton of email everyday that we delete or ignore so what is the difficulty with filtering what you don't want to read and paying attention to what you do want to read. I see no reason to split the list and often read missives even if they are of no concern to me just to keep in the loop as it were.

Also, while the issue of getting an external post may be boring for all the academic staff on here, some of whom may already agave EE posts the list is also reads by AS and QA people at the universities who should be made aware of the ridiculousness of their requirements.

On that note I would like to add, universities should be willing to pay at least a fair fee for external validation work if they really value the input of external experts. AS and QA departments take note the living wage apples to casual staff as well!
