The Events programme
This years programme begins on October 26 with a lecture by Peter Hall on Mapping and Security. Peter will argue that our mapping and visualisation tools are wedded to rationalistic and military-industrial systems which are less suited to complex challenges of the 21st Century. The computing clouds, socio-technical networks and ‘wicked problems’ of today cannot, technically, be contained, so perhaps we need less synoptic and more emergent methods and tools to visualise and re-imagine the idea of security? Peter co-edited Else/Where: Mapping - New Cartographies of Networks and Territories (2006) and has written widely on issue of design and the topographies of power.
This will be followed on November23 with Simon Woolham and Les Reid, contributors to the recent special issue of the Humanities Journal on creative cartography , who will present and discuss recent work In Search of the Shortcuts. On December 7th Joe Gerlach will be in discussion with David Overend and Les Back on Vernacular Cartographies - a rescheduling of the event that had to be cancelled earlier in the Summer due to industrial action by UCU.
Further details about these evening events (6-8pm), the venues, and booking Information will be available shortly on our website and Eventbrite.

Community Mapping Projects
We have two major new projects in the pipeline, further details available on our website: : www.livingmaps.org.uk<http://www.livingmaps.org.uk/>
The Groundbreakers
An audio heritage trail network around the Queen Elisabeth Olympic Park exploring the back story of the site, including its archaeology, industrial , environmental and social history. The trail network includes a family trail, and a trail for people with learning disabilities. The trails are supported by a programme of walks, talks and other events.
Citizens Atlas of London
The aim is to create a new kind of online atlas, based on the stories of Londoners living in regeneration hot spots across the capital ( otherwise known as ‘opportunity areas’) , a narrative mapping of the past and present of their neighbourhoods as a baseline from which to develop their own vision of the kind of town they would like their part of London to become. In addition to building a prototype pof the atlas, the pilot project will produce a toolkit for citizen master planning to be used in a variety of learning and advocacy contexts, including schools, community projects and local campaigns.. The longer term goal is to establish and support the development of a London-wide network of ‘citizen mappers’ who have gained cartographical skills as a result of their involvement in the workshop programme and who want to contribute to the ongoing development of the Atlas.
On Line Journal
Following the successful launch of our online journal at Easter, Livingmaps Review 2 will be out late Autumn. Planned contributions include Phil Cohen on Critical cartography and Urban Studies, George Jaramillo on Extractive Geographies, Immersive Lives, Giota Alevizou on Community mapping, Sam Hind on Caretographies, David Lemm Maps and Icons, Jennie Savage Fracture Mob , Grayson Perry’s Island of bad Art, plus news and reviews of exhibitions, events and books.
