A Research Associate position is available, supervised by Prof Chris Robertson and Dr Stephen Corson, working on a project concerned with statistical modelling and analysis to assess the impact of both seasonal influenza vaccination and pneumococcal vaccination in Scotland. The project is a mixture of statistical data analysis to estimate vaccine effectiveness as well as developing and fitting statistical and mathematical model based upon transmission dynamics to assess the overall impact of the vaccines. This is a joint project with Health Protection Scotland and will involve working with large anonymised national linked data sets with information about infections, hospitalisations, deaths, prescriptions, vaccination history and consultations for respiratory illnesses.
Candidates will be educated to a minimum of a 2:1 Degree in Mathematics or Statistics or related subject and have a PhD* in a relevant discipline, or significant equivalent experience. You will have a desire to work in an applied research environment; good communication skills; experience of analysing large complex data sets using statistical software, in particular R; the ability to manage your own activities and prioritising your own workload within agreed objectives to ensure that all activities are completed to deadlines.
*Whilst a Research Associate is ideally sought for this position, applications from candidates who are close to PhD completion or whose award is pending are welcome. In such circumstances, the appointment will be made at Research Assistant level (RS06 salary scale: £26,537 - £29,847) and duties will be adjusted to reflect the grade of the post. This will continue until the PhD award is confirmed, at which point the duties and grade will be revised accordingly.
