In the Archives Hub we display digital images or links to digital content:

http://archiveshub.ac.uk/data/gb1837-des/ico/des/ico/3/14/84

So this is within the EAD description, so it is entirely integrated with the metadata, has a persistent URL, and it can also be provided to the Archives Portal Europe or other systems.

In the new Archives Hub interface, to be launched later this year, we will be displaying the digital images or links to digital content as we do now, but also have a search filter for digital content.

However, despite lots of encouragement to our contributors to provide links to digital content, we still have quite a small proportion of descriptions that have links to digital content, and I think that is more due to the lack of resource to digitise, rather than the digital content being available but not being included within the description.

I think at present, out of 320,000 units of description (provided by over 300 institutions) we have 7,700 that show images or link to digital content.

It is one of the requirements that always comes near the top of researchers’ requirements, but it is usually topped by comprehensive and detailed descriptions….but maybe that will change as the younger generation become researchers, and expect more digital access.

See: http://archiveshub.ac.uk/value/

Interestingly, in our user survey in 2015 we asked whether researchers are equally happy to access physical or digital content, and 57% said they were happy to consult either, 14% said they would prioritise digital, 21% said that they would prioritise physical.

Jane.

We’re gradually increasing the number of digital images we have and each time I have to copy something for someone because we don’t already have an image I add it into the catalogue. Some of the images are just one page, others are say letters where there might be 10 images linked to the same catalogue entry.

You can click on that entry to open the full details and see a thumbnail version of the image, then click on the image itself to see it full-size. In some cases, we have multi-page versions, which we put as pdf files in the Document field. We make sure there is a sample image in the Image field too, to highlight the existence of a digital version.

For example, on the Wellcome Library website, a search will bring up items in all catalogues, such as books, e-books, pictures, archives and so on. Where the result is an e-book, there is then an immediate link to viewing the e-book online, with full facility to conduct a further text search within it.

Is it to do with difficulties in software and if so, do some cataloguing software systems make this easier or more difficult to achieve? I would also like to see any examples to the contrary, that is to say, websites which do offer this linked facility.
