Research Assistant
Salary range: £31,740 - £33,370 per annum
A Research Assistant position is available in the Centre for Environmental Policy within the Faculty of Natural Sciences, at the South Kensington Campus. The successful candidate will be expected to start in October 2016.
The main purpose of the post is to provide statistical and GIS support for the European-funded project Physical Activity through Sustainable Transportation Approaches (PASTA), of which the London case study, focused on East London, is led at Imperial by Dr Audrey de Nazelle. PASTA aims at understanding correlates and inter-relationships between active travel (walking and cycling), physical activity, air pollution, and crash risk and at evaluating the effectiveness of interventions to promote active travel. This is investigated through 1) a large scale longitudinal survey in 7 European cities 2) personal health and exposure monitoring campaign; and 3) stakeholder involvement.
As a member of the PASTA team you will assist in managing PASTA participants and stakeholders and maintaining PASTA databases. You will be involved in data analyses on projects linking behaviours to air pollution exposures and health, and comparative analysis of air pollution wearable sensor performance. You will assist a team of 3 PhD students, a Research Assistant, an external consultant, and the project lead.
You must have an appropriate undergraduate degree (or equivalent) and a Masters in a discipline such as statistics, public health, environmental sciences, policy, or city and transportation planning. You will have working knowledge of the statistical package R, experience in conducting survey data analysis in areas such as transport, health, or air pollution (in R or using other software packages). Experience in data management, and experience in use of GIS software and GIS data management are also essential.
You must have excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to synthesise, summarise and articulate complex ideas also share enthusiasm for a project for a range of audiences. Ability to be open-minded, cooperative and to work independently and as part of a team and to prioritise your own work in response to deadlines are also essential You must also have the ability to develop and apply new concepts, a creative approach to problem-solving and be able to work effectively as part of a team as well as independently.
This is a fixed term position available for up to 9 months with a possibility of extension subject to funding.
